Abstract
Background: Anemia remains a public health challenge worldwide. The aim of the study was to estimate the hemoglobin level of girls in Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology & Sciences (SHIATS), Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Materials and Methods: Total 50 healthy girls students of age 18 – 22 years studying at SHIATS, Allahabad were included in this study. Hemoglobin and hematocrit were estimated by using Sahli's haemoglobinometer method. Results: Out of 50 girls, 34 (68%) were anemic. Majority (54%) had moderate anaemia while 14% had mild anaemia and no severe anaemia. A higher proportion (42.1%) of the anemias was aged between 18-20 years. Conclusion: Our study highlights the importance of the health education on the consumption of iron rich foods and proper implementation of intervention programs that would increase the hemoglobin levels among the college going age group girls through prophylaxis treatment, dietary modification and helminthes control.
